State Volunteer Congress 2010

"Today I learnt that Facebook isn’t just for kids!! Social media is a valuable resource and can be utilised to promote my group and get more people into volunteering"

The 2010 State Volunteer Congress was held on Monday 6 December at the National Wine Centre in Adelaide, South Australia.

And with more than 450 people registered to attend, the program was a resounding success.

The theme for the 2010 Congress, Marketing volunteering: are we selling the unsellable?, really seemed to strike a chord with the South Australian volunteer community.

Highlights of the day included special presentations from leading university communication lecturers, Dr Denise Wood and Alison Wotherspoon, as well as key note speakers from two of SA’s most successful marketing firms: Jim Robinson of JAM Adelaide and Michelle Prak of Hughes Public Relations.

Ric Carter of Enova Digital ensured the high energy levels were maintained into the afternoon with an entertaining and insightful presentation on ‘The Ins and Outs of Social Media’.

And who could forget the live demonstration of recording, editing and posting a youtube version of the day's events by Carolyn Bilsborow and Mike Carroll from the University of South Australia - they made it look easy!

You can check out photos and video clips from the event via FaceBook

In addition, our Twitter forum (hashtag ‘#SAVolunteers’) did "trend" in SA on the day, reaching the top five tags in the State!- it was great to be able to see this new social media phenomenon in action on the day.

Once again supported by the University of Adelaide, the day was hosted by the Minister for Volunteers, Hon Grace Portolesi MP.

I honestly cant pick (the most useful and practical session) - they were all fantastic. Such a great mix of content and presenters. Congratulations to the team that organised it.
