To Infinity and Beyond (Dec 5-9) South Australia's 10th State Volunteer Congress was opened on International Volunteer Day, Monday 5 December by the Premier of South Australia. Hon Jay Weatherill MP. His address also launched the re-signing ceremony of South Australia’s Advancing the Community Together partnership (ACT Partnership).
2011 was the 10th anniversary of the International Year of Volunteers and was celebrated world-wide as IYV+10. In recognition of this milestone, the Office for Volunteers (OFV) partnered with Volunteering SA&NT to deliver an expanded Congress program themed To Infinity and Beyond.
The program included the initial plenary day at the National Wine Centre followed by a series of free training sessions and presentations over the following four days. This included a cocktail reception on Wednesday 7th December hosted by the Right Honourable Lord Mayor of Adelaide.
More than 500 registrations were received to attend the Congress.
Feedback indicated that the program was strongly supported and very successfully received with keynotes Futurist, Mr Tim Longhurst and celebrity advocate for wellbeing, Dr John Tickell being highly regarded.
The Congress program covered a variety of aspects of the use and impact of technology and social media including the identification of a range of free tools available, outlining the legal considerations and demonstrating how organisations can create simple promotional videos for use on the internet (the video made on the day by UniSA to illustrate this can be viewed via links on this page).
Prior to the Congress, the Office for Volunteers worked closely with keynote presenter, Tim Longhurst, conducting a short survey of all registered patrons.
The strong response helped greatly in producing a fresh, relevant keynote address that encompassed the following themes:
The Power of Small - an ideology about effectiveness and managed growth rather than the size of an organisation or it’s operation
Break Down the Barriers - identifying and addressing barriers to effective activity
Wisdom of the Group - encouraging better utilisation of available resources and to maximise the existing experience of an organisation
