Equal Opportunity Resources

The term discrimination refers to the choices and judgments we make every day.

For example, when buying a car we make a discriminating choice—to match our needs according to our budget, the make and model of the car, and so on.

Similarly, organisations discriminate in a way when recruiting staff and volunteers. There will be many applicants, so employers need to make a choice. They choose the best person for the job by discriminating according to the applicants' skills, experience, etc.

These types of discrimination makes sense.

But some types of discrimination are unfair and against the law.

The Equal Opportunity Commission website (external link) contains a wealth of information, providing simple explanations of what 'equal opportunity' means for an organisation and an individual.

A range of short videos have recently been developed to support organisations in running their own equal opportunity awareness programs.  Individuals can also use the videos online section to increase their EO awareness.

The videos can be viewed online or downloaded free from the website.  Each video is accompanied by a set of 6 questions for learning practical techniques to deal with discrimination issues your business might confront.

The videos can be accessed here (external link).
