Government programs
The South Australian Government is a great supporter of volunteering and many departments and agencies manage programs within our communities that are effectively run by volunteers. These programs provide a lot of opportunities to volunteer in many worthwhile projects.

Courts Administration Authority (external link) - Volunteer Service provides the vital link between the court and its clients and contributes to the Courts Administration Authority’s ongoing commitment to achieving and maintaining a high level of service to all court users
Department for Correctional Services (external link) - volunteers provide a wide variety of assistance and support from running libraries in prisons to providing support to a prisoner in stress, assisting their families and transporting visitors to prisons.
Department for Families and Communities Volunteers Unit (external link) - facilitates a consistent approach to volunteering across the Department and partnering agencies.
Justice of the Peace Services (external link) - Being a Justice of the Peace (JP) is voluntary activity carried out on behalf of the South Australain Government.
The Attorney-General's Department Justice of the Peace Volunteer Service provides a witnessing service to the public during business hours in the central business district of Adelaide.
Environmental Volunteers (external link) - Visit Department of Environment & Heritage's volunteer hub to get information on a range of environmental events and activities
Fishcare (external link) - Fishcare Volunteers are a dedicated group of keen fishers who donate time, energy and effort to help fishers understand the rules and regulations that apply to recreational fishing in South Australia.
Friends of Parks (external link) - There are Friends of Parks Groups throughout South Australia. Objectives include manual projects, fund-raising, heritage sites, educational/cultural events, wildlife projects, publications, information displays, social programs, meeting other people and having fun.
Landcare (external link) - Join the thousands of Australians who give time to their local landcare group— the only requirements are an interest in the environment and enthusiasm for conservation.
Natural Resources Management (external link) - Whether planting trees, monitoring frog and platypus populations, weeding and cleaning our waterways, regenerating wetlands, growing seedlings, revegetating native habitats for threatened species or improving sustainable farm practices, 70,000 South Australians are helping conserve our land and our way of life.

Patwatch (external link) - A new local community volunteer group established to help monitor the Patawalonga Lake and its surroundings and to ensure that the local community is integrated into the management practices for the lake system.
Community Mentoring Program (external link) - matches young people in schools with trained volunteers from the community. Community Mentoring works to assist students to make successful transitions at school and to achieve their potential. Simply by giving one hour a week during school terms can make a big difference. Department Of Education and Children Services (external link) - offers a range of different volunteer opportunities across the State. The Department recognises that their volunteers bring diversity, expertise, life skills and knowledge which benefit staff, children and students in preschools and schools, educationally and socially.
Step-Up (external link) - is a community based learning initiative of the Senior Secondary Assessment Board of South Australia which allows the recognition of community learning to count towards a South Australian Certificate of Eeducation.
ICAN Learning Program (external link) - aims to provide engaging learning programs for young people aged 12 to 19 years who are at risk of disengaging or who have disengaged from learning and to assist young people in fullfilling their potential to participate in full and productive learning, and a working life in the community.
Country Fire Service (external link) - works with other organisations, community and industry to reduce fire risks and associated hazards.
SA Ambulance Service (external link) - provides ambulance response across South Australia. Outside of the metropolitan area and major regional centres they rely on dedicated volunteers working out of more than 70 stations to deliver their service. Without these volunteers, many rural areas would not have a local ambulance service.
State Emergency Service (external link) - is an organisation established to render immediate assistance during emergencies and disasters, to provide community response to ‘day to day’ incidents such as vehicle accidents, searches, cliff rescues, flood and storm damage situations and any other incidents that might require rescue or search services.
State Emergency Service Marine Rescue (external link) - delivers a range of services to the seven accredited Volunteer Marine Rescue Associations and is responsible for the coordinated development, implementation and on going management of policies, procedures, funding and standards with respect to the operational and administrative functions of the Squadrons.
Airwatch (external link) - students from around Australia are learning about their local air and how they can keep it clean.
Department for Environment and Heritage (external link) - offers many different volunteer opportunities ranging from environmental field work to assisting with the operations of government owned historic sites.
Friends of the Botanic Gardens of Adelaide (external link) - aims to foster interest in the activities of the Botanic Gardens of Adelaide and to raise funds which may be used for any purpose which has the approval of the Board as being of benefit to the Gardens.
Frog Census (external link) - The Frog Census provides a 'snapshot' of the distribution and abundance of frogs in South Australia. It relies on people from all over the State taking tape recordings of frog calls during 'Frog Week' in the second week of September each year.
Waterwatch SA (external link) - is a water quality monitoring and catchment education program that provides you with an opportunity to make a difference to your local creek, river, dam or wetland.
Youth Environment Council of South Australia (external link) - advises government on the environmental perspectives of young people. It includes young people from all education systems in SA and peak youth organisations.
Flinders Medical Centre (external link) - volunteers are an integral part of patient care within the hospital contributing to a range of duties including special support programs whcih require extended commitment to ongoing training.
Julia Farr Services (external link) - volunteer team seeks to provide a direct service to residents focussing on maintaining a high standard of quality of life, which is complimentary to work programmed by paid staff.
Lyell McEwin Health Service (external link)- is a public hospital located in Elizabeth Vale. For volunteer opportunities contact their volunteer association.
Women's and Children's Hospital (external link) - volunteers serve as important links to the community. They serve as ambassadors on issues that affect the health and well being of the women and children of South Australia.
Department for Environment and Heritage (external link) - offers many different volunteer opportunities ranging from environmental field work to assisting with the operations of government owned historic sites.
History Trust of South Australia (external link) - offers volunteers a variety of work including cataloguing collections, maintaining research libraries, research, providing education and school holiday programs, conducting oral history interviews and assisting at exhibition openings and other special events.
Office for Recreation and Sport (external link) - through the State Coaching and Officiating Centre, provides a range of information regarding volunteers, volunteer management and getting involved as a volunteer in the sport sector.
Office for Youth (external link) - seeks to expand opportunities for young people in South Australia by ensuring that young people are considered and included in the achievement of South Australia's Strategic Plan objectives.
Youth EnvironmenSt Council of South Australia (YEC) (external link) - represents young people from across the State. Delegates range in age from 10 to 21 and represent every state School District, Catholic Education, Independent schools and peak youth organisations.
The Women's Information Service (external link) - provides free and confidential support to women on a range of areas including relationships, health, legal matters, housing, financial issues, material assistance, work, education, violence, etc. They also provide linkages to many volunteering opportunities.
